FAQ's

THE QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED THE MOST

Who are Travel Gang travellers?

Travel Gang adventures are for schools, academies and other special interest creative and performing arts groups. Each group is made up of students, teachers and chaperones including parents and other siblings.

How many students do I need to have a tour?

We need a minimum of 30 paying participants to create a viable adventure. This can be a mixture of students and chaperones. Our average group size is 40 and is generally made up of two thirds students and one third adults (eg. parents and other support staff from your school). Our largest group size has been 100 people.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

Any minors under the age of 18 must have an accompanying chaperone. Fort students groups, they may wish to have one adult for every 4 students. In some cases parents travel with their children so age isn’t an issue. But for unaccompanied minors our age restriction is 12 years of age. Younger children can join us on our trips that are open to families. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but some of our trips (especially to New York in winter) are pretty physically demanding.

Who will be my group leader?

While we can’t tell you who your leader is until a few months out from your adventure, we can tell you they will be awesome. Our Travel Gang leaders are experts in travel and have done many trips before. They are practicing industry workers in the performing arts as well as travel fanatics. You will have a great time with them. Some trips will have more than one Travel Gang leader.

Can I just do part of the trip?

Our adventures are not designed for op-in and opt-out. Our adventures are designed as a package and are all inclusive. Think of it like seeing a Broadway show. When you go to see a show, you don’t leave halfway through...unless its really bad! Within the adventure you have down down and leisure time structured into the itinerary so you can do your own thing if you wish. Unaccompanied minors must always be with their group and chaperones during leisure time.

Can I make any changes to the itinerary of my group trip, either before or during the trip?

Please make sure you are happy with your adventure itinerary before making your deposits and booking because we are unable to change them halfway through or if individual travelers change their mind.

Can I add an extra night or a family holiday on the beginning or end of my group trip, either before or during the trip?

You sure can. Most of our adventures have an International and Domestic package option. International package includes the entire thing. With the Domestic package we meet you in the first city on the itinerary and say farewell to you in the final city on the itinerary. With Domestic packages you are responsible for your own International flight there and back.

Can we book a triple or twin room?

Depending on the trip style you choose, our trips are organised on a twin, triple or quad share basis. As our bookings are made well in advance, individual room requests can be booked but please be aware that the less people there are in a room the higher your adventure package fee will be.

Can I book a single room?

You can choose a single share accommodation for your trip but it becomes quite expensive.

Can teachers travel for free?

Yes. Talk to us about how this works when you call.

I have special dietary requirements – will they be catered for?

Absolutely.

What will the food be like on my trip?

Most of our adventures have breakfast included and depends on the school’s requests. Lunch and dinner is usually at your own cost but can be included in the tour package fee if the school requests it.

Are trips physically demanding?

Our trips usually involve a lot of walking which can be difficult for less mobile people. Our most demanding trip is New York in the winter. One of the days involves walking outside in the cold and snow for approx 8km.

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory for all Travel Gang travellers and should be taken out at the time of making your first deposit. You must provide proof of your travel insurance because you will not be able to join the trip without it.

What things are not included in the tour cost package?

We do not cover passports, insurance, Visa (eg. in the USA its called ESTA), spending money, lunch and diner.

What essential things and documents do I need to pack?

It’s important that you always travel with your current passport, visas, travel insurance and Travel Gang documentation. Its good to leave copies at home with a trusted family member. For all other things to pack we give all of our Travel Gang members a comprehensive packing list in their adventure handbook.

Do I get any free time?

The beauty of travelling with Travel Gang is that we create and design our itineraries to have a mixture of development and learning activities PLUS leisure and downtime. The primary focus of our trips are to educate but we make sure you don’t miss out on seeing all of the bucket list sights and sounds of the destinations we travel to. Your Adventure Handbook will have more details on what your trip itinerary and timeframes permit.

What standard of accommodation should I expect?

We generally book 4 star accommodation unless otherwise specified by the school’s staff.

What communication facilities will be available?

Many hotels and public places have Wi-Fi so it’s usually possible to keep in touch with home every couple of days, if you so desire. Phone cards and SIM cards are easily available in each destination we travel to so you can be in touch with home while away. We also use Facebook to share photos with family and friends who are staying at home so they can see all of the exciting things you are up to on your trip as it unfolds.

How can friends and family contact you?

If family and friends are unable to contact you in an emergency through email or phone, they can contact Travel Gang directly. Emergency contact details (for your destination) are listed in your Adventure Handbook.

Will I get internet coverage?

Some places like New York have free city Wi-Fi hot spots everywhere and other places will have no coverage at all. If you stumble into the latter, take the rare chance to just sit back and get to know your fellow travellers the old-fashioned way. Most hotels we stay at have wifi included in our packages.

What if I don't have a passport yet?

You need 6 months validity after your return date to your country of origin. If you do not have a passport, you should apply for one straight away as it can take a while. If you have a passport that is valid but will expire within a 6 month period of your return date you should apply for a new one straight away also. Eg. if your trip returns to your country of origin on January 25th, you will need a passport that lasts at least until 26th July of the same year.

How many Chaperones can I bring?

If you have parents and siblings that would like to join the adventure as chaperones please get them to complete the registration also. You can fit 4 people maximum to a room. If you have a family of 5, you will need to book 2 rooms and split your family over the two rooms.

How can I pay?

All payemnts are made through your online portal link that you will recieve once you join a tour. Keep this portal link for future payments. Credit card fees and GST are all included in the tour estimate.

I can't remember what was included in the itinerary. Where can I see this information again?

Each tour will have a newsletter that you can find on our website. We will send you the link to your regular newsletters.

Can I organise my Travel Insurance through Travel Gang?

We don't look after insurance as many people have this free with their credit cards. We encourage you to investigate if your credit card product offers this service. Also check that it provides the cover that you want for cancellation and medical treatment. Travel Insurance is quite personal so please explore the options available to you.
